Women Of Color United Goals


Overview:

1.    Build Linkages between WOC United and women’s coalitions globally.
2.    Increase awareness of the impact of violence against women and HIV and AIDS on women of color globally.
3.    Develop a joint policy platform to address violence against women and HIV and AIDS focusing on domestic and foreign policy.
4.    Advance a research agenda on the intersection of violence against women and HIV and AIDS, as well as associated driving factors.
5.    Set up mentorship structure to support inter-generational, inter-gender, academic and community work.

Detailed Activities:

1.   Build Linkages between WOC United and women’s coalitions globally.
Action Steps
:
a.    By the end of 2009 we will obtain at least four memorandums of agreement with women of color-focused organizations (2 from the U.S. and 2 from the Global South)
b.    Convene 2 phone and/or face-to-face meetings with the MOA-partners by the end of 2009.

2.    Increase awareness of the impact of violence against women and HIV and AIDS on women of color globally.
a.    Presentation at International AIDS Conference and AWID Forum
b.    Conduct radio interview(s) through 3 phase media campaigns
c.    Develop Blog article(s)
d.    By end of March 2008 create and distribute VAW and HIV&AIDS fact sheet.

3.    Develop a joint policy platform to address violence against women and HIV and AIDS focusing on domestic and foreign policy.
a.    By end of December 2007 we will review and finalize platform questions for candidates.
b.    By end of December 2007 we will finalize our state of demands for candidates.
c.    By end of February 2008 have a list of platform issues for distribution to 8-10 presidential candidate offices.
d.    By end of February 2008 begin to provide technical assistance to organizations engage in the 41 Million Strong Campaign; including monthly call-in’s to update the public about our issues and how to shape/influence campaigns.

4.    Advance a research agenda on intersection of violence against women and HIV and AIDS, as well as associated driving factors.
a.    By the end of 2009 we will focus HBCU’s, especially the seven (7) with Master’s in Public Health programs, social work, and women’s studies and identify a minimum of 6-10  faculty already doing research and highlight their work in an article or resource list that will be shared through national and international distribution lists
b.    By the end of 2009 we meet with 3-5 private funder affinity groups to encourage philanthropy to support  programs, research, etc that addresses violence against women and HIV and AIDS

5.    Set up mentorship structure to support inter-generational, inter-gender, academic and community work.
a.    By June 2009 the subcommittee will have developed and defined our mentorship models.
b.    By December 2009 we will select a subcommittee to shape our mentorship activities.
